This piece is a tile 5x5 inches in size, it has many details on it that make it more 3 dimensional. There is minimal free space left on the slab that the designs were built on, making everything look clustered. There are many pieces on the tile, most do not meld together but are rather separate, doing their own thing.
The main elements of design that are used are texture and form. The little flat circles create a bumpy texture on the tile, and the more protruding shapes such as the cones or balls are forms that catch the eye. The tile and its 3 dimensional objects look like a slide full of bacteria under a microscope, and that's where I got my inspiration from. As I was making this tile, I was thinking about how it would look on a wall of an art museum. With this in mind I wanted to make some objects on the slab taller that others to cast a shadow from the light on it. This would give the tile depth and dimension. This piece serves as decoration, and I wanted to make sure it stood out from the flat and plain walls around it. I like this piece because I had accomplished what was my intent with it. There are many nooks and crannies that shadows can hide in. There are also many high points to reflect and catch light. This tile looks very unique and I enjoy looking at it from different angles. |
